Substance abuse, which is also known as drug abuse, is typically described as the consistent use of a certain substance in which one consumes it in ways or amounts that isn’t allowed or accepted by medical professionals. It is also abuse when these drugs are used in inappropriate ways, such as for performance enhancement within sports. Substance abuse can be caused by many factors, for example the amount of stress one is under, peer pressure felt by this person, or even genetic influences. Substance abuse can definitely be looked down upon within society, making it hard for people to come to terms with their addictions. However, talking to a substance abuse counsellor or psychologist can allow these people to feel a sense of safety and acceptance when opening up about their problems. They will attempt to assist the patients with the mental and emotional aspects of their substance abuse, as well as their physical pain of withdrawal. They can also provide one with the skills to steer clear of the substance in the future, especially when they are past their rehabilitation stage, and making sure the chance of relapse is low.
